There has been so much hype and almost hysteria in the photography world surrounding Canons replacement for the venerable 5D. Owning a 5D myself I was quite interested to see how the new offering shapes up. I have posted here before with links to Jeff’s site reviewing the cameras excellent low light performance (a prerequisite of the name 5D) but one photographer in particular has been exploring the cameras full 1080P video mode. The great thing about this is you use the same lenses in your kit bag so if you want a fish eye effect, strap it on, if you want a super zoom with image stabilization, its just a lens change away. You also get to revel in the same ISO for video and stills so you can shoot available light full HD movies! Its fair to say this feature has left a lot of photographers wondering how to bring video into their repertoire. I originally discounted the 5D due to the auto focus remaining the same as the last 5D, It has been slightly upgraded but I’m holding out for the next 1 series body however, I’m now thinking this may have been a good investment for the video feature alone. As I start to shoot more video myself (corporate work) I’m beginning to look more and more to the 5D MkII.
One photographer that has grasped the video capabilities with both hands is Vincent Laforet, he was lucky enough to get hold of a pre-production 5D Mk2 not once but seven times! he certainly made very good use of his time with the camera and to date he has released two short films demonstrating the cameras awesome video quality as well has his own enigmatic story telling abilities. I recommend taking a look at his very interesting blog. Click here for Vincent’s blog
